In pre-Hispanic times was called Playa del Carmen Xaman Ha (Mayan language: Xaman Ha ',' North Water ')? and was a starting point for the Maya in their pilgrimage to the sanctuary of Ixchel in Cozumel. The first modern settlement dates from the early twentieth century when there was located a community of fishermen and coconut farmers and tree gum. Until the mid-eighties Playa del Carmen was a small town of step with less than 1,500 inhabitants, but in the last two decades have dramatically changed the pace of growth of tourism.
Playa del Carmen offers a number of attractions in the surrounding area.
Xcaret. Eco-archaeological park located 6 miles south of Playa del Carmen, where you can appreciate the culture of Mexico, the flora and fauna of the region, the ruins of the ancient Mayan city of Pole, and in turn enjoy the beaches Caribbean Sea and cenotes, underground rivers, swim with the dolphins and snorkeling in the practice, among other water activities.
